Proposing an Alan Turing Day Observation in Saratoga Springs
Objective
To honor the legacy of Alan Turing—mathematician, codebreaker, and father of Artificial Intelligence—by launching a community-wide observance on his birthday, June 23. This annual event will serve as a catalyst for ethical, inclusive, and locally rooted conversations about AI and its role in our shared future.
Theme: AI and Us: Shaping the Future Together
On June 23, we propose a public event featuring a panel of local leaders, AI experts, artists, and ethicists. This gathering will introduce the Saratoga AI Alliance, showcase innovative local AI projects.
Why Alan Turing?
Turing’s brilliance laid the foundation for modern computing, but his life also reminds us of the moral obligations we carry as we shape powerful technologies. Observing Turing Day allows Saratoga Springs to recognize both the promise and responsibility of AI innovation.
Educational and Creative Engagement. Leading up to and following Turing Day:
Workshops will introduce the basics of AI and explore its ethical implications.
Short videos and guides will help families and educators start conversations about AI at home and in classrooms.
Creative contests will invite essays, art, and media exploring themes like “The Future of AI in Saratoga.”
Community Dialogue and Policy Reflection
Turing Day will launch a series of public forums on the societal impact of AI—privacy, equity, environmental sustainability—and a platform for diverse community voices to be heard. Expert panels will begin drafting local recommendations for responsible AI policy.
Digital Platform and Outreach
A dedicated website and active social media presence will amplify Turing Day and year-round activities. Stories, resources, and event updates will be shared widely using the hashtag #TuringDayAI.
Sustaining the Vision
This annual observance will be the starting point for long-term initiatives, including:
The formation of a Saratoga AI Youth Council
An Annual Saratoga AI & Ethics Summit
Recognition through the Saratoga Ethical AI Award
